AZ Minimum Wage and I-9 Form

AZ Minimum Wage and I-9 Form
In Arizona, the minimum wages is $6.90 until December 31, 2008, at which time it changes to $7.25 on January 1, 2009.  Please download the Minimum Wage Poster (found in the “Required AZ Posters” topic) for your use in your business.

The I-9 form was recently revised and you must use the newest form with any newly hired employees.  The content of the form has not changed, but the I-9 now has an expiration date. It is interesting that employers had the same I-9 form for over 20 years and once the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued the new I-9 form, it forgot to include the correct expiration date as required by the federal Paperwork Reduction Act.  So, now we have a new form to use with a correct expiration date.  The new Form I-9 can also be found by clicking here.   USCIS also updated their Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9 and this new Handbook can be found by clicking here.  The new Handbook contains updated examples of I-9s that are filled in by employers, a list of questions and answers and updated, color copies of the actual acceptable documents.  I think you’ll find it very helpful for properly completing the I-9’s.  Please start using the new I-9 form immediately with all your new hires.

As you have probably seen on the news, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a new I-9 inspection campaign across the country, targeting employers suspected of employing unauthorized workers. These “inspections” are announced by visiting the company’s business location and serving them with a subpoena demanding that they turn over the company’s I-9 Forms for all current employees and for all employees terminated over the past year.  It is important that you keep a separate file for all of your I-9 forms.  Do not keep your I-9 form in your employee’s personnel file.
